Precious gemstones are hard and durable. If for no other reason than this, it makes them popular.  Diamonds, sapphires, and ruby are the hardest of gemstones, are not prone to chipping, cracking, or breaking.

Emeralds have a fair to good toughness, making it a stone that requires more care in wearing.

What is the Best Way to Store Your Jewelry?

You will want to keep your diamonds, sapphires, and ruby jewelry away from your other jewelry because that can scratch the other gemstones.  And diamonds can scratch your sapphires and ruby jewelry.

Tarnish-Resistant Bags and tabs

I provide tarnish-resistant bags with each piece of jewelry that you purchase from me for this reason.  I don’t use the popular plastic bags because they off-gas, which isn’t good for your jewelry.

The other thing I provide is a tarnish-resistant tab to keep with your jewelry in the above-mentioned bag. These two things alone will cut down some of your cleaning time.

Check Your Gemstones Regularly

The other thing of note is to check your jewelry to make sure the gemstones are not loose.  This is especially important with claw settings, but even gemstones with bezel settings can become loose.

To make sure that your jewelry always shines and sparkles like the day you got it, it is important to know exactly how to clean and store your jewelry.

Tips and Recommendations for Caring for Your Jewelry

  • Store your jewelry in separate anti-tarnish bags.
  • Check your jewelry often to make sure the gemstones are not loose.  One idea is to check every month on your birthday.  So if you were born on the 15th, check on the 15th of each month.  That way you won’t forget.
  • It’s a good idea to remove your jewelry to bathe or wash your hands. Remember to store them in a safe place, so it does not slip down the drain.
  • Avoid wearing fine jewelry when you are doing housework, gardening, or participating in a sport.

When to Use a Professional Goldsmith

Have your jewelry repaired and sized by a professional goldsmith.  If you need a goldsmith referral, please ask me.  I will do my best to help you find one in your area.

Insure Your Jewelry

Do not forget to insure your fine jewelry pieces. If you are unsure about the value, have it appraised by a professional goldsmith.

Diamonds

If you have purchased an item of jewelry with diamond accent stones, the same cleaning and care guidelines apply.

Pearls

This is especially important if you have a pearl.  I had the great opportunity to travel to Greece and even meet some of my relatives.

While in Mykonos, I purchased a Mykonos pearl ring.  Unfortunately, I ruined the pearl because I never took it off when washing my hands or bathing.  As a result, all the beautiful sheen came off the pearl.
