It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Hanane’s Mediterra Soaps small business. I have been using her soap for years now, and it’s a priority to not ever run out! And, this is a continuation of my Support Local Series.
Please tell me a bit about your background.
I am a mom of two teen girls, so you can imagine the hormones and mood swings in my house. My poor husband.
Explain your journey that lead you to the art form that called you.
My journey started at the young age of seven or eight watching my grandfather make pure olive oil soap from our olive trees in the Mediterranean. I was fascinated! More than ten years ago my soap business was born.
How did you come to decide to make this a business?
I started making soaps for family and friends and ventured into a small farmer’s market. I sold out on my first try and I never looked back!
Business names are important. How did you come up with your business name?
Mediterra Soaps is my company name, and I chose it because my background is from the Mediterranean.
What is your favorite product? Or What do you like to make the best?
Pure simple olive oil soap. It’s the mildest on earth and it’s what started my soap journey.
Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from my beautiful and sweet grandfather. He is in heaven now, watching me, and I hope he is feeling proud of me.
How would you describe yourself from your beginnings to where you are now?
I can honestly say that I didn’t change much. I still make my soaps in small batches, and I actually still use the same display props I used in the beginning. My grandfather gave me my table cover, and I still use it for more than ten years and counting.
How do you market your products?
I use social media and mostly word of mouth.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to anyone who is thinking about starting their own business?
Take baby steps and make sure you are doing something you feel passionate about. If money is your first priority, you might be disappointed. It really has to be a labor of love.
